What Repointing Actually Involves

Done right, repointing means grinding out the failed mortar to a depth of at least 3/4", cleaning the joints, dampening the brick so it doesn't pull moisture out of the new mortar too fast, and packing fresh mortar in tight layers. Joints are then tooled to match the original profile — typically concave on Worcester homes. Done wrong — which we see all the time — it means smearing fresh mortar over the failed joints. That looks fine for one season and falls apart the next.

Why Original Mortar in Older Worcester Homes Fails

Most pre-1930s Worcester chimneys were built with soft lime mortar. It was the right choice at the time — softer than the brick, so it would crack and crumble before the brick did. But after 80–120 years of New England weather, that mortar has reached the end of its life. You'll see it crumbling out between bricks, leaving gaps you can stick a finger into.

Choosing the Right Mortar Mix

Modern mortar comes in different strength types — N, S, M, and O. For most Worcester chimney repointing, we use Type N mortar above the roofline. It's strong enough for the exposure but soft enough to flex with the brick and crack first if there's stress, protecting the brick itself. Using the wrong mortar mix — particularly Type S or M on an older soft-brick chimney — causes the brick to spall instead of the mortar. This is one of the most common mistakes we have to fix from previous contractors.

When Repointing Isn't Enough

If the brick itself is in poor shape — spalling, cracked, or missing — repointing alone won't fix it. In those cases we'll be honest with you and recommend a partial rebuild instead. A repointing job over bad brick is wasted money.

Frequently Asked Questions

In everyday use the terms are interchangeable — both refer to grinding out failed mortar joints and packing in fresh mortar. (Strictly speaking, traditional 'tuckpointing' uses two contrasting mortar colors for a decorative effect, but most contractors use the term to mean the same thing as repointing.)
